Faster Forward: Cablevision-Fox slapfest drags on

When I wrote last Sunday's column about the dispute between Fox and Cablevision over what the New York cable-TV service should pay the network to carry its channels, I worried that the piece would be overtaken by a Saturday-morning settlement.

Amazon agrees to buy UK movie streaming and rental service Lovefilm

Amazon has just announced it has agreed terms to buy up all the remaining shares of Lovefilm it didn't already own. The British outfit operates a subscription-based movie rental and streaming service in its home market along with Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway, and should give Amazon a very solid base from which to build its presumably Netflix-besting ambitions. Lovefilm has been just about the closest thing Europe has had to the ridiculously successful North American movie distributor and Amazon is arguably getting in just in time, given Netflix's overtures toward expanding into the UK. Customary closing conditions will need to be met before the final stamp of approval is applied, but the acquisition is expected to complete by the end of Q1 of this year. Amazon's wading into yet more content distribution, who'd have thunk it?

Chevron WP7 jailbreak to be disabled by Windows Phone 7 update

The public download for Chevron WP7 -- the jailbreak/sideloading tool for Windows Phone 7 devices -- didn't remain up for long. After initial discussions with Microsoft and a revelation that Redmond was OK with "official homebrew development," the Chevron team decided to take the app offline. It's still floating around, of course, and still being used by developers -- though that may soon change.

On their team blog, the Chevron crew has now revealed that Microsoft's upcoming January update to Windows Phone 7 will plug the hole Chevron WP7 used to unlock devices. They're also getting ready to head to Washington to discuss homebrew development with Microsoft, as well as other issues raised by the WP7 community at large.

Anyone else curious what exactly "official homebrew" is?

Oracle continues to make Sun customers miserable

I've been putting off writing about my ongoing saga with Sun Oracle, because I have yet to reach anything resembling satisfaction. But I can't stop myself from venting anymore. You simply would not believe how frustrating it is to get any kind of Sun hardware or software support from Oracle.

In fact, to put it succintly: You can't. At least, I certainly haven't been able to.
