N64oid brings Nintendo 64 emulation to Android devices

There's not exactly a shortage of video game emulators for Android devices, but there has been one notable, 64-bit exception. That's finally been rectified with the just-released N64oid application, however, which finally brings emulation of Nintendo 64 games to the platform -- and, like the other emulators from developer Yongzh, it's conveniently available right in the Android Market (for $5.99). As you might expect, there are a few glitches and hiccups to be found even on high-end phones like the Nexus S, but it does seem to run remarkably well for an initial release and, as Download Squad points out, you can also use a separate, freely-available app to add some Wiimote controls to the proceedings. Also, it means you can play Goldeneye on your phone. Video after the break.

Angry Birds will celebrate St. Patrick's Day with some green levels

Angry Birds St. Patrick's Day
In the next few days, the awesomely adventurous, angry, avians will find themselves flying through the lush, emerald greens of St. Patrick's Day-inspired levels. The new levels are expected to be a free upgrade to the free Angry Birds Seasons game, which is available on Android, iOS, Symbian and WebOS.

St. Patrick, if you're not an any-excuse-for-a-party American, is the patron saint of Ireland. Green is national color of Ireland, which is why everyone wears green for St. Patrick's Day, and thus why the new Angry Birds levels will be green too. The game is expected to arrive "before St. Patrick's Day," March 17.

In other news, Angry Birds: Rio, which accompanies the big-screen film of the same name, is also due out later this month.

Android Market Malware Has Users Begging Google To Remotely Disable Bad Apps

These past few days haven't been Google's best. The company ran into a bit of a problem with its Gmail service late last week, with some users reporting that all of their e-mails had been deleted. Google says the problem only affected a fraction of its user-base, but seeing headlines along the lines of ?USERS REPORT GMAIL DELETIONS? probably didn't go over too well in Mountain View. Then there was the Android Malware incident, which is technically still ongoing. A series of malicious apps had appeared in the Android Market, apps capable of stealing user data and ?dialing out? without the express permission of the phone's owner. What to do?

What are the first applications you install on a new computer?

newcomputer
Setting up a brand-new computer is a mixed blessing: On one hand it's a bit of a hassle, but on the other hand it often feels great to start off with a blank slate. It's a great opportunity to fix all those things that bugged you about the old system, or try out that new file organization scheme you were thinking about.

While apps like Ninite make it easier than ever to download and install a slew of tools all at once, the question still remains: What are your "choice apps"? With a new computer or fresh install in front of you, what are the first few applications you set up on each and every system you use? What apps are so essential to your computing experience that you can't see yourself doing without them? Let us know in the comments!

N64oid emulator for Android review and gameplay video

N64oid for Android: N64 emulation
N64oid, the Nintendo 64 emulator for Android, was released earlier today, and being absolute fans of the console, we figured a hands-on review would be the only fair and just thing to do. You don't want to know how many hours we've spent playing multiplayer GoldenEye here in the Download Squad bunker, and Lee can almost complete Ocarina of Time while blindfolded.

Now -- before you get too excited -- you can't network N64oid for awesome on-the-toilet multiplayer GoldenEye action, but it does play single-player games surprisingly well. Like PSX4droid, it still suffers from some framerate drops and slow-and-crackly sound, but it's still more than capable of playing Ocarina of Time.

If that wasn't exciting enough, get this: if you have a Wiimote and nun-chuck, you can pair them with your Android device and use them instead, removing the need to poke ineffectually at the on-screen virtual gamepad.

Take the jump for our full experience with N64oid, and a gameplay video of Ocarina of Time on our Nexus S test unit.
