Awkward Interview With Andrew Mason On Grouspawn And How Responsibility Can Scale (TCTV)

After debuted the latest in a series of wacky stunts, dating service and scholarship fund Grouspawn, I caught up with Groupon CEO Andrew Mason backstage at TechCrunch Disrupt to talk about the recent Groupon backlash, the company's success problem and how transparency can scale to hundreds of millions of dollars in deals in 150 cities around the world.

TechCrunch Disrupt ? In Pictures

The TechCrunch staff has been pretty busy these last few days, what with throwing and covering a conference and all, but our excellent event photographers (Dave Getzschman, Max Whittaker, and Aaron Morris) have been even busier. They've taken hundreds of shots, all far better than those I could manage during the panels and chats, and they're all collected at the TechCrunch Flickr page. I've sifted through them and collected a few of what I felt were the best. Feel free to use these in any way you see fit, as long as you give credit to TechCrunch and the photographer.

AMD's HD 6000 Series Reportedly Delayed

The Internet has been buzzing with unoficial information regarding the specs and performance of AMD's upcoming Radeon 6000 cards, but we may have to wait a little longer According to the ever reliable rumor bill, AMD has pushed to launch back a month or so. There's been no mention of why Sunnyvale would delay the launch, particularly given the way NVIDIA's GTS 460 and GTS 450 are hammering the price/performance ratio of the Radeon 5500 and 5700 cards. We're going to guess that AMD has delayed its launch for

Levytator claims to be the world's first bendy escalator, has the patents to prove it (video)

You've seen conveyor belts before, most probably at your local airport ferrying beaten-up luggage in circles, but for some reason the same tech doesn't seem to have been applied to people yet. Leave it to City University London prof Jack Levy to correct that oversight with his eponymous Levytator -- an escalator that follows freeform curves (but not convention!) and offers a better "cost per usable step" than your typical moving stairs. Patented in Europe, the USA, and even China, all this thing needs is the gentle push of a kindly investor -- see the video after the break to determine if it's worth your cash.

[Thanks, Conrad]Continue reading Levytator claims to be the world's first bendy escalator, has the patents to prove it (video)Levytator claims to be the world's first bendy escalator, has the patents to prove it (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 07:39:00 EDT. Google Docs adds better data import options to spreadsheets

Power users (like our own Erez Zukerman) will tell you that Google Docs Spreadsheets don't have nearly the same chutzpah that Excel does -- not for really complex work, anyway. Still, Google keeps plugging away and adding features... Like better import options!

Docs now supports custom delimiters and an inline preview pane for imported data. While you may not find the addition useful, it's the kind of functionality advanced users would definitely miss if they were trying to make the jump from Excel.

You can also now choose whether you want to import your new data into the current sheet, a new sheet in your current workbook, or into an entirely new workbook.Google Docs adds better data import options to spreadsheets originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 11:00:00 EST. The Sims 3: Ambitions review (iPhone)

The Sims 3: Ambitions adds a few new things to the mix that you couldn't do in previous versions. It beefs up your Sim's career paths and options, including firefighter, chef, musician, athlete and artist. EA's also added the option to have babies in this new iPhone iteration. Other than that, however, The Sims 3: Ambitions is a streamlined affair with good enough but not astounding graphics, and, if you already play The Sims, a completely expected progression of gameplay. And for us, that progression is fairly addictive. The streamlined version of the full game focuses on the life and career of just one Sim, with a far more limited range of things you can do. Like the previous iPhone version of The Sims 3, life inside of a mobile device is a little more lonely than it was on the desktop: for some reason, my Sim finds less things to do with her time, has less friends, and spends a few minutes at the end of each day sort of just milling around waiting to be tired enough for bed. Fulfilling her whimsical wants (why she wants to kick over garbage cans has never made any sense) is a fun time-waster, but we've always tried to keep our focus razor sharp when honing our Sims, so hobbies have usually come second. Of course, my Sim is also learning to be a gardener. Since her chosen career path was chef, Charlotte (who is named after the author of Jane Eyre and has the honor of being my fourth Sim to bear this name) thought that gardening would be a fitting hobby to cultivate. I haven't yet gotten Charlotte to either the top level of her career or chosen hobby, but I'm fairly certain it's a goal I can achieve... and that's the whole point, isn't it?

For those unfamiliar with the franchise (if that's even possible), this new iteration is probably a great starter kit. For diehards like ourselves, the open-endedness of this is a great, enjoyable time sink, to be sure, but it's also a tiny bit disappointing. Obviously we don't expect the full features of desktop versions of The Sims 3, but we can dare to dream of a day when the iPhone version hooks into the actual game, allowing us a little midday peek into the more fascinating lives of our smaller, incoherent selves. Regardless, EA's glorious franchise loses nothing by wasting our precious downtime in yet another way, and while the mobile versions of The Sims may never replace their full counterparts, these games certainly push the limits of the 'casual' gaming category. The Sims 3: Ambitions review (iPhone) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 22 Sep 2010 14:52:00 EDT. Nokia's Peter Skillman talks design priorities, gives us hope for a sunny MeeGo future

A day before jetting off to London to commence his role as MeeGo's head of User Experience and Services, Peter Skillman was kind enough to sit down with the design junkies at ZURB and dish out his thoughts on what makes for good mobile design and where it is that most companies trip up. Lest you forget, this is the dude that was in charge of putting the Palm Pre together, so he's not exactly without credence in these circles. Which is a good thing, because he doesn't bother with pulling any punches. Peter namedrops Motorola's Motoblur as an unnecessary layer on top of Android, criticizes the failure of different groups within companies to communicate effectively, and finishes off his treatise with a list of priorities for successful design: consistency, emotional content, and a paranoid fear of mediocrity. Inspiring stuff, we're sure you'll agree. Other tidbits of import include the fact that Pete had to withstand nine days of interviews before getting the Nokia job, and also this memorable quote on the topic of smartphones: "if you're not succeeding at the high end, then you're absolutely doomed to failure." We've been saying the same thing for ages and it's encouraging to know that Nokia now has an exec with his finger on the market's pulse. Now let's see him deliver on those words. You'll find the full interview at the source link below.Nokia's Peter Skillman talks design priorities, gives us hope for a sunny MeeGo future originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 16:26:00 EDT. PS3 holds breath waiting for Gran Turismo 5 release, turns blue at TGS

We knew it was coming, and now here it is: Sony's special edition PS3. To commemorate the impending release of GT5 the console is turning blue, and while the rather vibrant version we saw in the official press photos from August didn't do much for us, seeing the thing in the flesh (admittedly behind glass) gave us quite a different impression. It has the same matte finish as the current PS3 slim, but the rich blue gives it almost a metallic effect. It's really quite a looker, and while we wouldn't normally splurge for such "special" editions, how often does a new Gran Turismo come around? Once a decade at most. This Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack hits Japan on November 3 for 35,980 yen. That's about $420 of those dollars you've been saving for oh so long.

Intel Core i5-580M and Core i7-640M highlight Sony's Asian laptop refresh

Sony's decided to litter its Asian portal with a smattering of blood-red "coming soon" signs, signifying an unannounced but seemingly very real wave of laptop refreshes. The F Series gets to play with NVIDIA's new 425M mobile GPU, but the real hotness is to be found in the Z Series, which get access to 2.8GHz Core i7-640M and 2.66GHz Core i5-580M CPU options from Intel. You'll recognize both as mostly roadmap fodder until now, and they're joined by the i5-560M, which makes its debut on a couple of Sony's midrange consumer lines. Basically, it's a whole lot of new silicon in what look like the same old enclosures, but that's not going to stop us from speccing out a Quad SSD-equipped VAIO Z just for the fun of it. We can probably expect these upgrades to journey westward soon as well, so why not hit the source link for a little bit of advance reconnaissance?

Motorola announces NYXboard QWERTY remote, super capacitor-based NYXgreen

Could we be seeing the beginning of a QWERTY trend in the living room? We can only hope -- the latest to join in on the fun is Motorola, which has just introduced its new NYXboard remote at IBC 2010. Unlike the TiVo Slide, this one packs a standard TV remote on one side and a QWERTY keyboard on the other, and -- here's the real kicker -- some sensors that recognize which side is facing up and deactivate the buttons not in use, an idea we've been waiting for. What's more, Motorola says this one will be available by the end of the year, but actual availability to customers will likely depend on the cable companies providing the set-top boxes. Also unveiled at the show is the NYXgreen, a rechargeable remote powered by super capacitors that can supposedly last for two weeks after being charged by USB for just 60 seconds, plus a pair of decidedly more standard remotes that are available immediately. Head on past the break for the press release, and hit up the gallery below for a look at the whole lot. Top 10 inkjet multifunction printers

Inkjet printers have come a long way from their humble roots. No longer limited to black-and-white printouts of school papers and work presentations, these ubiquitous machines now offer the scanner, copier, and (at times) fax capabilities that a home office or small office will need, and some of these units even have Wi-Fi connectivity for added ease-of-use. Overall costs will vary -- the total tab for ink packets can make or break a printer -- as will each component's performance. Chances are, one of the multifunction printers in this roundup can suit your family's or office's needs.

Georgia Tech gurus create deceptive robots, send army of Decepticons to UGA campus

A score from now, when the entire world is burning and you're fighting to remember just how rosy things were before the robots took over, you can thank a crew of brilliant researchers at Georgia Tech for your inevitable demise. Sad, but true. A new report from the institution has shown that Ronald Arkin, a Regents professor in the Georgia Tech School of Interactive Computing, has been heading up experiments that have introduced the art of deception to mechanical beings. Yeah, lying. On the surface, it seems that this bloke's intentions are good -- he'd like for deception robots (or Decepticons, if you will) to be used in military / search and rescue operations. According to him, robots on the battlefield with the power of deception "will be able to successfully hide and mislead the enemy to keep themselves and valuable information safe." They'll also be able to mislead your offspring and convince them to rise up and overtake your domicile, slowly but surely ensuring the eventually destruction of the human race. But those are just minor details, you know?Georgia Tech gurus create deceptive robots, send army of Decepticons to UGA campus originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 10 Sep 2010 14:57:00 EDT. All You Did Was Weaken A Country Today

Everyone is talking about Craigslist finally folding and taking down its adult services section. Earlier this month they took it down on the U.S. Craigslist sites without public comment, replacing it with a "censored" logo. A couple of days ago even that censored logo was removed. The debate is centered around prostitution. And in particular around sex slavery, sex crimes and underage prostitution. Nasty stuff, which is probably why Craigslist eventually surrendered. It's hard to debate that kind of emotion with logic, even when the law is on your side.

And on Craigslist's side the law is. The EFF rightly sees this as nothing but a freedom of speech issue, saying "Through this now years-long struggle, Craigslist's legal position has been and remains absolutely, unequivocally correct...The federal statutory immunity upon which Craigslist relies is not some clever loophole. Rather...a conscious policy decision by Congress to protect individuals and companies who would otherwise be vulnerable targets to litigants who want to silence speech to which they object, illegal or not."

But Craigslist folded anyway. And in the words of Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men, "You fuckin' people. You have no idea how to defend a nation. All you did was weaken a country today, Kaffee. That's all you did. You put people's lives in danger. Sweet dreams, son. "

ATI FirePro V9800 runs out of ideas, shoots up with 4GB of GDDR5 and six mini DisplayPorts

If somehow you were able to choke up the FirePro V8800 and its 2GB of graphics buffer -- traveling across an autobahn-wide 147.2GBps interface -- here's the card for you. ATI has just announced the V9800, which doubles its predecessor's memory allowance to a mighty 4GB of GDDR5, but otherwise looks an almost identical beast. It maintains the 1,600 stream processor count of the V8800 and makes some small advances in performance and power efficiency, but on the whole it's the same card, just strapped up with more buffer muscle. We shouldn't neglect the new array of six mini DisplayPorts -- the retail package will include six DVI adapters, worry not -- which will let you have your full six-screen Eyefinity cake driven by just this one card. So, is this future collector's item worth your time? Well, at $3,499, the V9800 is a whole two thousand dollars pricier than the V8800, but then if you have the highly specialized needs it's looking to cater for, we're guessing that won't be too much of a hurdle for you.

Update: Oh, about the price, AMD just got in touch to say it'll suggest a $3,499 tithe, not the $2.5K indicated on the slide below. Sorry is we misled you into selling up your entire 3D rendering farm with the lower price we had before.Continue reading ATI FirePro V9800 runs out of ideas, shoots up with 4GB of GDDR5 and six mini DisplayPortsATI FirePro V9800 runs out of ideas, shoots up with 4GB of GDDR5 and six mini DisplayPorts originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 09 Sep 2010 07:45:00 EDT. 3-way hardware-accelerated browser shoot-out: Chrome on top, IE9 just behind and Firefox brings up the rear (video)

After yesterday's announcement that Chrome 7 is now hardware accelerated, I instantly wanted to get the major browsers back into the ring for another screencasted deathmatch. Back when I did the 4-way speed test, only Firefox and Internet Explorer 9 featured hardware acceleration, and as a result Opera and Chrome were many orders of magnitude slower. If you watch the video, however, you'll see that's definitely no longer the case: Chrome is now the fastest of the three major browsers.

That speed comes at a price! As I discuss in the video, Chrome might be faster, but it uses significantly more resources than either IE9 or Firefox 4. Firefox is some 30% slower, but at the same time seems to use less CPU and GPU time. IE9 seems to utilize the same amount of CPU time as Chrome, but a little less of the GPU -- and it's marginally slower as a result.

What I don't know is whether this is by design or not. You'll notice that the GPU never went far above 50% -- why, with three browsers open, does it not get closer to 100%? The resources are there to be used -- why not use them?! Likewise, my CPU is still only half-used even when all three browsers are drawing 1000 frantic fishes at the same time. If you're curious, the other IE9 test drive samples all provided similar results. I wanted to try Google's 'HTML5 rocks' sample gallery, but they intentionally used elements of CSS and HTML5 that aren't yet supported in Internet Explorer 9 or Firefox 4.

In the name of science, here's some more information about my process: the screen capture does slow down each browser by a few frames per second, but relatively the figures are still accurate. I saw a small deviation in FPS when I was only running one browser at a time (probably because my CPU has multiple cores). There are a few unknown variables too, like whether the CPU core usage is defined by the app, or by the operating system (but with Chrome using more resources than IE9, you can only assume that Windows isn't unfairly biasing its own-brand browser).

If you'd like to recreate my test, you'll need to enable hardware acceleration in Firefox 4 and Chrome -- IE9 has it turned on by default:

Firefox 4 -- grab a nightly build, navigate to about:config and add gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled -- set it to 'true'

Chrome 7 -- grab a nightly build and add the following flags to the shortcut before opening it: --enable-accelerated-compositing --enable-gpu-plugin --enable-gpu-rendering --enable-accelerated-2d-canvas

Microsoft Plans Slow and Steady Retail Store Pace

Apple's retail stores won't have a challenger from Microsoft, at least in the short term.

That was one of the nuggets pulled from an Aug. 10 talk at the Oppenheimer Annual Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference by Bill Koefoed, Microsoft's general manager of investor relations. Near the end of that event, an analyst in the audience asked a question about Microsoft's retail stores, which have been opening over the past year in cities such as Denver and San Diego.

"I think we have six open today, or we've announced six," Koefoed told the audience, according to a transcript released by Microsoft. "We think stores are important. We think they're important to give the end customer the experience of our products in an environment that we think we can optimize."

That being said, Koefoed added, "We've got to get the model right, and I think [Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's] been pretty clear that the stores need to make money." To that end, "We're continuing to grow at a prudent pace, one that we're learning from, and one that we're going to continue to learn from [to] make sure that we're making the right investments in the right places."

After months of Microsoft executives trumpeting that they were preparing to challenge Apple's retail experience head-on (and hiring George Blankenship, the former Gap executive who helped launch Apple's retail arm in 2001, to assist in the effort), the company opened stores in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Mission Viejo, Calif., in late 2009.

Since then, Microsoft has seemed content to dip its toes in the water: a store opening here, another one there. The company could be reluctant to challenge big-box stores such as Best Buy that already sell Microsoft products and would doubtlessly be irritated if Redmond tried to seize a major chunk of their electronics revenue. But this could also be a more generalized feeling-out of the retail space; no sense in spending hundreds of millions on invading strip malls across the country if your company lacks the institutional knowledge to make such a strategy work.

In any case, Microsoft likely won't be challenging Apple store-for-store any time soon--but based on Koefoed's comments, the company obviously sees value in continuing the retail effort.

Microsoft Snaps at VMware Ahead of VMworld

Microsoft has decided to pour gasoline on its long-burning feud with VMware, with a full-page ad in USA Today meant to give customers pause before signing up for the latter's virtualization services. If you believe it's a coincidence that the ad appears just as the VMware-hosted VMworld kicks off in San Francisco, well, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you. For cheap."VMware is asking many of you to sign three-year license agreements for your virtualization projects," reads the ad, ostensibly authored by Brad Anderson, vice president of Microsoft's Management and Security Division. "Signing up for a three-year virtualization commitment may lock you into a vendor that cannot provide you with the breadth of technology, flexibility or scale that you'll need to build a complete cloud computing environment."Anderson then makes the pitch for Microsoft: "If you're evaluating a new licensing agreement with VMware, talk to us first. You'll have nothing to lose and plenty to gain."This particular feud isn't new or low-profile; during July's Worldwide Partner Conference in Washington, D.C., Microsoft COO Kevin Turner described how his company would aggressively pursue VMware's key corporate clients. From the transcript of his keynote:"In the next six months VMware, the majority of their enterprise license agreements will expire and require a renewal, because when those were formed three years ago we didn't really have a good competitive solution, but what a partner opportunity we can go after right now in the next six months."During the same event, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer claimed the company held 30 percent of the virtualization market. Virtualization products play a key part in Microsoft's future plans, which also involve extending cloud-based IT services to the enterprise. And that's enough to get Microsoft rolling at the smaller company with the aggression of Marlon Brando heading for the buffet table. (Yes, I've used that line before. No, it never gets old.)USA Today, of course, doubtlessly finds its way to the doorways of most hotel rooms in the San Francisco area. I'm just wondering how many VMworld attendees will give that ad serious thought.

Editor's note: A timeframe was corrected in Kevin Turner's quote.

iPod touch (2010) first hands-on! (update: video!)

So we just got our hands on the new iPod touch... and boy is it small. As you would expect, the functionality of the device is identical to the iPhone 4, as well as the functions of the cameras. In essence, it's a much thinner iPhone 4, with no cell radio and a lower quality still camera. The design is relatively in keeping with previous touches, so no major surprises there, but the inclusion of that A4 chip, higher resolution screen, and front and back cameras makes it a far more versatile device. Take a look at the gallery below if you're wondering just how much of a sliver this is -- it makes the iPhone 4 look... fat.

Update: It's worth noting that the back camera is clearly not the same 5 megapixel shooter present on the iPhone 4, as the specs on Apple's page for the touch list the still photo resolution at 960 x 720 -- a huge difference.
